A Sanctuary for All People
Salem Presbyterian Church is a church in Salem, Indiana. We’re dedicated to being a sanctuary for all people, living out the Matthew 25 call to welcome, serve, and care for our neighbors with compassion, respect, and practical support.
Many people who come through our doors are looking for a place of kindness, understanding, and belonging. At Salem Presbyterian, we believe church should be a place where people are welcomed as they are — where questions are welcome, where faith can be explored honestly and at your own pace, and where community grows through care for one another.
Who we are
Salem Presbyterian Church is a caring, nurturing community of faith that has been part of the Salem community for more than 200 years. Our members come from many different backgrounds, but we gather with a shared desire to worship God, grow in faith, and connect with one another in meaningful ways. We walk alongside one another through difficult times and celebrate together when life brings joy.
For us, being a sanctuary for all people means doing our best to create a place where kindness, understanding, and belonging are stronger than judgment, and where the dignity of every person is honored.
That spirit of care extends beyond our congregation. One way we share that care is by opening our building to ministries that serve the community. A local Warming Station organization uses our facilities to provide meals, supplies, and support for people experiencing homelessness. Our building also provides space for a backpack program that supplies essential items for children entering the care of child services. And when another local congregation lost its church building to a tornado, we were honored to welcome them to worship in our library while they rebuilt.
If you are new to Salem Presbyterian, you will find information about where we are located, what to expect, and where to park on the Plan a Visit page. Our congregation currently gathers for worship both in person and by phone. If you would like to join us by phone, please contact us, and we will gladly share the information you need.
Where we come from
Salem Presbyterian Church was founded on August 14, 1817. Our historic sanctuary in downtown Salem was built in the early 1840s and has been a place of worship, prayer, and community for generations.
While our congregation has never been large, countless families across the years have found friendship, faith, and belonging here.
Salem Presbyterian was also the first church in the local community to call a female pastor, in 1979. In 2021, we became a Matthew 25 church, committing ourselves to building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism, and eradicating systemic poverty.
All are welcome here regardless of personal history, family background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Where we're headed
More than ever, Salem Presbyterian Church is committed to supporting our church family and our community in growing in the Christian faith, leading meaningful lives, and doing good works to the glory of God — “to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.”
As we move forward together, inclusion, compassion, and belonging remain at the center of who we are as followers of Christ. We continue looking for ways to live out our calling to be a sanctuary for all people in our church, our town, and our daily lives.
